The 4 common ways you’ll “use Linux”

  1. Local Linux (installed on your own machine)

    • Best for: making Linux your primary daily environment.
    • Pros: fastest feedback loop; you live in the terminal; no SSH needed.
    • Cons: higher risk of breaking your personal system; more time spent on desktop/hardware quirks (graphics, Wi‑Fi, drivers) vs server skills.
  2. Virtual Machines (VMs) — recommended for learning

    • Best for: learning system administration safely.
    • Pros:
      • You can run multiple distros side-by-side (Debian + Ubuntu + Rocky) without “committing.”

  1. Start with 1 VM as your sandbox server

    • Treat it like a real server: you “admin it,” run services, read logs, manage users, etc.
    • Use snapshots before changes.
  2. Add a VPS later (optional but valuable)

    • Once you’re comfortable with SSH, services, and logs, a VPS teaches DNS/TLS/firewall realities quickly.
  3. Add containers when you hit app workflow needs

    • Especially useful for Node, background workers, local dev parity, and packaging apps cleanly.

What “terminal options” actually mean in practice

Common workable combos:

  1. Local terminal + VM

    • You open a terminal on your host OS and SSH into the VM (or use the VM console).
  2. Local terminal + VPS

  3. VS Code Remote (SSH)
